AUCKLAND TROTS

VAN DERBY’S RECORD RUNS MILE IN 2.0 2=5 SIR FRANK AT LONG ODDS Among the interesting features of the opening day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday was the brilliant mile by Van Derby in the Australasian grass record time of 2.0 2-5 and the surprise victories of Stargum in the Mt. Albert Handicap and Sir Frank in the concluding event, the Papakura Handicap, the return of the Hamilton pacer being over a quarter of a century. Santa Fe and Reception were the only two favourites to score outright. Following are the concluding results : OTAHUHU HANDICAP Of £400; limit, 4.33; 2 miles 2 I —KENWORTHY, Mr 3. A. Cutts’ b . g by Frank Worthy—Peter Moko mare, 6yrs, 36yds bhd (J. 6 5 KKKNRRQOK LASS, Mr" "\V. F. Wolliams’ bin by Author Dillon —Locanda Queen, aged, 2 Iyds bhd (1.. Laver) 3 3—. NAVY BLUE, Messrs T. H. Gough and W. Sanders’ blk m, by Man o’ War—l.ogan Pointer Merivale mare, 6yrs, 18yds <M. Stewart) t t'Dead-heat for second. Also started: l —2 Bexley Girl, limit, coupled with Sandusky, 12yds; 4—4 Our Peggy, limit; B—B Double Great, 5—4 Kewpie’s King, 10—ii Willie Derby, 12; 11—10 Star Pronto, 24; 9—g Gold Dredge, 7 6 Our War, 48. Winner trained by owner and F. V. Cutts, Mangere. The favourite bracket Bexley Girl and Sandusky collided shortly after the start and they both fell, neither taking any further part. Kenworthy went a very good race and won well. Kewpie’s King broke up at the start and Our Peggy led out rrom Bexley Girl, Willie Derby, Sandusky, and Double Great. Bexley Girl then collided with her stablemate and both fell and the field went round again, closing up with Our Peggy in front or Willie Derby, Double Great, Fernbrook Lass, Kenworthy and Navy Blue. Our Peggy led into the straight from Kenworthy with a gap to Fernbrook Lass and Navy Blue. In a fine finish the rast-flnishing Navy Blue could not catch Kenworthy and the judge could not separate Navy Blue and Fernbrook I.ass, two lengths further back. Our Peggy was fouTth and then came Our War, Gold Dredge and Willie Derby. Timeo, 4.27 3-5, 4.27 2-5, 4.29 2-5. RAILWAY HANDICAP Of £250; limit, 3.34; 1* miles. 1 — I—SANTA FE, Mr W. Winner trained by F. J. Smith, TakaninL Santa Fe was always going .like a winner and when she moved up across the top she gave her supporters a few anxious moments. Adversity was awkwardly placed most or the journey and with a better run may have done better. Kete Kura had every chance but was not equal to tbe other two. Parauri was slow to move and Adversity also did not get away too well. Kete Kura was the first to find his feet from Young Pointer, Derby Lu, Santa Fe, John’s Last and Adversity. Kete Kura held sway passing the stands from Young Pointer. Derby Lu, Santa Fe, Handicapper, John’s Last. Adversity and Lucky Love. Kete Kura was still the leader as they raced along the back and crossing the top Santa Fe moved up behind the leader while Adversity also made a move to be third behind Kete Kura and Santa Fe as they swung for home with Handicapper, Derby Lu and Isabella Pointer next. Santa Fe won by half a length froro Adversity with Kete Kura a neck away. Handicapper was rourth and then came Isabella Pointer, John’s Last and Forest Jewel. Times, 3.23, 3.23 2-5, 3.24 1-5. FEBRUARY HANDICAP Of £225; trotters; limit, 4.51; 2 miles. 1— 2—RECEPTION, Mr W. J. Wheeler’s ch m by Frank Worthy-Oleda, aged, LL, (owner) 1 4 4—WIN HUON, Mr D. H. Billlngton’s b g by Win Alto-Huon Bell, aged, 24yds (H. Billington) .. 2 3 3—BINGEN SUN, Mr G. A. Williams’ br gby Nelson Bingen-Sundial, aged, limit (G. A. Williams) .... 3 Also started: B—B Autumn Lu, Lt., 3 3 Bingen Sun, Lt., 9—9 Dilfashion, Lt., 2 1 Nelson Chier, Lt., 7—7 Elissa, 12 yds, 5—5 Arapai, 36yds, 6—6 Mute, 144 yards. ) "Winner trained by owner, Cambridge. Quite early in the running Reception, Nelson Chief, Autumn Lu, Win Huon and Bingen Sun singled themselves out from the rest of the field, but arter they had gone a mile and a-half, Reception was trotting solidly just a length in front or Nelson Chief, with Win Huon and Autumn Lu together next, and Bingen Sun only half a length away. Reception was still going nicely to finish two lengths behind Bingen Sun, as they raced towards and into the straight, but lt was then seen that Reception had the race in safe keeping from Win Huon and that Bingen Sun would secure third money. Autumn Lu tired a little bit in the run home to finish two lengths behind Bingen Sun, with Nelson Chief following. Dilfashion, Arapai, Mute and Elissa were always hopelessly out of it in so far as their backers were concerned. Times, 4.43 3-5, 4.42 3-5, 4.45 2-5, 4.46 1-5. MOUNT ALBERT HANDICAP Or £225; limit 3.38; 1A miles. 9 6—STARGUM, Mr G. A. Williams’ b g by Gumdigger-Nelhi Bramley, 6yrs, 24yds (Owner) l 11—u—MILITIA, Mr G. A. J. B—9 Silk Lady, Lt., 14— 14 Charteris Bay, 24yds, 13—13 Kia Kaha, 24yds, 15—15 Post Haste, 2 4yds. Winner trained by owner and W. Head, WellsTord. With the withdrawal of Axminster, the Cambridge-trained Lynn Rey was barked down to short odd? but he tangled at the start and put. a seal on his chances. The winner turned up in Stargum, who usually runs a fairly honest rare. He went a little 'bit better than usual to take command half-way up the straight and won easing up by three-quarters or a length. His dividend was nvpr a score and his success was well merited as he ran 3.24 2-5 from a 3.36 mark. Cyrano and Marcus tailed Militia early with Harlow. Silk I.adv, Hillcrest and Stargum following, but after they had gone a mile Militia was only showing a length clear or Marcus, with Lady Potts a length further back and Harlow, Stargum and Silk Lady handy. Militia led into the straight rrom Lady Potts, but Stargum quickly ran past them and won easing up. Marcus weakened a little over the last part to be fourth. Times, 3.2 1 2-5, 3.26 3-5, 3.26, 3.27 1-5. PAPAKURA HANDICAP nr £27 5; limit. 3.28; I A miles 5 B—SIR FRANK. Mr E. R. Smith’s b g by Frank Worthy— \ggie Bell, aged. 2 Iyds M. Winer trained by owner, Hamilton.

Sir Frank came with a good run over r the concluding stages to win all out by I half a length rrom Gold Circle, who had I taken command half a mile from home and ! appeared to be the likely winner half-way I down the straight. Vanora was always up 1 with the leaders and indicated bv bis forward running to day that he will get on the winning list just as he did towards the ; close or the season last year. True Trust ran a exceptionally good race, and impressed as one likely to win in tbe near future.
