CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEETS IMMIGRATION DISCUSSED At the February meeting or the Matamata Chamber or Commerce a communication was received rrom the South Auckland Associated Chamber asking Tor further suggestions on a remit regarding immigration. Mr J. Buchanan considered that care should he taken to see that Indigent people were not dumped on the country under any Immigration scheme. There should be some kind or a means test, ir only a low one. Mr G. G. Griffiths urged that any scheme or immigration should be coupled with a progressive land policy. He advocated the encouragement or the settlement or British Army officers. It was decided to incorporate both suggestions in the remit.. In response to a request rrom the Physical Fitness Week Committee, it was agreed to hold a special luncheon during fitness week and to ask a medical man to give an address to those attending. Disappointment was expresed at the nonappearance or Matamata names in the latest gazetted list or Justices or the Peace. Application Tor additional appointments had been made repeatedly during the past couple or years without success. A further letter m the Minister pointing out the acute shortage or justices in Matamata was decided upon. It was also derided to urge upon the Minister or Housing to have the State houses in Matamata comp'**t«i as soon as possible and that selected applicants be advised as early as possible. Damage at High School At the first meeting of the High School arter the school holidays, it was reported that during the vacation someone had broken into the school and destroyed some or the crockery. Several panes or glass had also been broken. The principal. Mr H. Fawcett, stated that cups had been taken rrom a box and deliberately smashed on the floor. It was decided to support an application from the Waiomou School Committee Tor an extension or the bus service so that children could come more easily rrom that district to Matamata. Physical Fitness Week Arrangements are well in hand Tor the observation or Physical Fitness Week 'February 18 to 25) in Matamata. A representative committee with the 'Mayor, Mr \V. A. Gordon, as chairman was formed at a public meeting and preparation-* are going forward with practically every sports organisation doing its part. On Saturday, February IS. a procession or snorts bodies will be held moving from the Town Hall to the Domain, where basketball games and displays by Boy Scouts will comprise a programme. At the same time -summer sports will carry on with their usual games, the tennis club holding a special tournament in which non-members will be invited to compete. The Swimming Club will hold a special club carnival on Thursday. February ->:s at which the public will be admitted free, and on Saturday evening. 25th. a sports programme is being arranged to be held on Bedford Park. During the week the schools will observe special fitness currirulas, and in addition an endeavour is to bp made to allow the public to attend a demonstration or health cooking methodat the High school home science room. The various activities are in line with the suggestions put forward by the Mini-tor or Internal Affair* in his circular to local bodies.
