ANNUAL MEETING HELD OPENING DAY’S RESULTS HIGH WEIGHT TO SPINNING WHEEL CUP EVENT TO SCOTLAND (By Telegraph.—Special from “ Martian”) ROTORUA, Saturday The first day of the Rotorua Racing Club’s annual meeting was held to-day at the Arawa Park course in fine weather. Spinning Wheel, always handily placed in the running, fought on in courageous style in a hard finish with Vaalso, who arter hitting the Trent at the turn proved just unequal to It in the straight. Chikara was finishing on and should be improved, while Haile Boy was closer at the finish than at any stage. Mlo Fratollo. too, came from a long way back to be closer at the finish than at any stage. Romani was first to break the line, showing the way past the stands to Spinning Wheel* Long Span, Advance Acre and Vaalso. Along the back there was no alteration. Spinning Wheel being still in charge at the hair-mile from Romani, Sulb Editor, Long Span and Vaalso, with Advance Acre heading the others. Vaalso moved up as they straightened up for home and over the last 100 yards or so the Issue resolved lt3elf Into a duel between Spinning Wheel and Vaalso, the former prevailing by a bead with a gap of two lengths to Chikara. Ora King gave his best performance to date when, after beginning smartly and being handily placed throughout, he came right away in the straight to win with something in hand. General Rlske gave a meritorious performance while Devon, after being fairly well back in the early stages was making up ground in the straight. The warm ravourite (Royal Message could no no better than a moderate firth. Rival was the smartest to show out, but within a furlong Seven Seas had taken up the running from Silver and Ora King. Seven Seas was followed at the halTniile by Ora King, and here Silver Lance was handily placed in rront or Devon, Royal Message and Forlorn. Ora King was in charge as they levelled up Tor home and he won very convincingly by three lengths from General Riske with Devon two lengths away third. silver I.ance was fourth. fallowed by Royal Message, and Rival. Silver Eagle, who was always in the running, held on to win narrowly, from Trevace, who finished very attractively, to endorse the good.impression hp had made in recent track trials. Valdene who also had been working well prior to the meet-ing-finished solidly and. like Trevace, will be all the better for to-day’s outing. The first to break the line was Silver Eagle, who showed out over the fir«t furlong rrom Trevace, Town Section and Clooneen, with Kenneth Robert, who began wide out. on the outer. Trevace was shading Silver Eagle as they went along the back with Valdene close on their quarters in rront or Kenneth Robert, Clooneen. Town Section and Pocket Venus. Kenneth Robert commenced to move through three furlongs from home and he ran up behind Trevace at that stage, the pair leading into the straight from Silver Eagle. Valdene, Clooneen and Ohmaha. Silver Eagle hit the rront hairway down the running and held on to withstand the determined challenge or Trevace in the last 50 yards or so. Winner trained by H. R. Abbot. Rotorua. Scotland gave hi* best performance for some considerable time when he finished on to win in very decisive style. In the past Scotland has proved himself to be a solid handicap performer, but to-day’s showing was easily his best far some time. Kena improved on Matamata running to be a commendable second while Miss Appellant impressed by the manner in which -he was sticking to her task at the end. The performance of Star Artist was most encouraging and the fact that she was practically in T.ne with Miss Appellant would indicate that it xv; 11 not be long before she makes amends for recent failures over a noddle distance. to-day. There was a large attendance. The weather was dull and the track in fast order.
