PAPER MILLS ABLAZE

Saturday In an outbreak of Are at tha Whakatane Paper Mills’ waste paper atore at 1 o’clook this mornIng over 300 tons of paper was destroyed and the concrete building gutted. The alarm was given at 1.30 and the brigade travelled five miles to the mill, which is outside their area, and worked tirelessly from 2 o'clock. They were still fighting the Are at 8 o clocq but had it under control with ■water from the adjacent river. The manager, Mr H. A. Horroeks, stated that the store was fully insured in the Norwich Union office for £2500. Over 3000 square feet of the roof ■was a glowing mass when the brigade arrived. The cause of the outbreak Is unknown, but its thought to have been spontaneous combustion. Tightlypacked paper required to begin cardboard manufacture in March is expected to smoulder for hours and rapid removal is impossible.
