The Governor-General, Viscount Galway, returned to Auckland yesterday after a few days’ fishing in the Urewera country. Mr C. K. Lawrie, J.P., of Pukekohe, was in Hamilton to-day. Mr B. Ashwin, Secretary to the Treasury, has been appointed chairman of the Local Government Loans Board. Mr Josiah Carson, of Rototuna, will sail from Auckland by the Awatea on Tuesday on a visit to Great Britain, the Continent and Canada. Mr Justice Smith, who is presiding at the quarterly session of the Supreme Court in Hamilton, is spend- ‘ ing the week-end in Auckland. Mr J. I. King, of Wellington, a member of the provisional council of tbe New Zealand Institute of Welding, was in Hamilton yesterday. Mr F. Findlay, chairman of the Waikato Hospital Board and Mr A. C. Burgess, secretary, have returned from the Hospital Boards’ Conference at New Plymouth. Messrs F. A. Garry and T. Kane have been elected members of the Teachers Superannuation Board for the North Island, and Messrs W. F. Abel and J. G. Poison for the South Island. Professor R. S. Aitken, who was a New Zealand Rhodes scholar of 1924, and who was recently appointed Regius Professor of Medicine in the University of Aberdeen, delivered his inaugural lecture at Marischal College last week. Sir William Gowers, formerly Governor of the Uganda Protectorate and now r head of the Crown Agents’ Department, Colonial Office, arrived at Auckland by the Stratheden yesterday from London. Messrs W. W. Allan, M. Knight, R. N. Forster, W. Gregory, A. H. Breen Wellington), C. F. Harris (Gisborne), L. H. Hills (Palmerston North), T. Johnson Auckland) and K. Mackay (Dunedin) are at the Hamilton Hotel. Among the diplomas and prizes awarded by the board of Governors of Massey Agricultural College, Palmerston North, was the Walker and Hall Shield for highest aggregate in stock judging, secured by L. G. Southon, of Hamilton. Captain J. A. M. Clachan, New Zealand Staff Corps, has relinquished the appointments of Area Officer, No. 4 Area, and Adjutant, Waikato Mounted Rifles and Ist Composite Mounted Rifles Regiment, Hamilton, and is proceeding to Australia to take up an appointment at the Military iCollege of Australia.
