SERIES OF ACCIDENTS
QUARRY WORKER’S ESCAPE ROPE grasped during fall (By TelCfrrtmh proa, WHAKATANE. Saturday At Taneatua a public works employer had an astounding escape yesterday. He was working on a shelf high above the quarry floor when the face suddenly slipped, hurling him backwards. He fell ten feet but managed to grasp the safety rope and was saved on the rocks 60 feet below. After medical atiention at the Whakatane Hospital he was able to go home. N'gatre Elvers (10). daughter of Mr H. Eviers, farmer, of Manawahe, when riding to school was dragged ofT by the back of a public works lorry swinging round the corner. She was admitted to Whakatane Hospital with deep cuts on the knee. Colin Welsh, ex-porter of Whakatane Hospital, suffered serious skull injuries when he was struck by a car near Allendale last night. Apparently he was walking near the centre of the road when a ear was approaching. Another was following him and as it passed one driver appears to have been blinded by the lights and failed to avoid Welsh w’ho was thrown heavily. The hospital reports his condition is fairly serious.
