CRICKET SELECTION

WAIKATO COMBINATION ANNOUNCEMENT TO-MORROW TEAM TO MEET ENGLISH SIDE The last series of matches in the Hamilton Senior A cricket competition prior to t.he visit to Hamilton of Sir ! Julien Cahn’s English eleven will be 1 played at Seddon Park to-morrow. At the conclusion of the day the Waikato team to meet, the visitors will be announced by the sole selector. Mr W. Everest, who has been keeping a watchful eye on the players since the Hawke Cup fixture with Hawke’s Bay, and it would not be surprising to see some new blood introduced into the side. To-morrow marks the commencement of the third round Wi the series. Claudelands will meet the leading team. Hamilton East, and the game should provide some hard cricket. Old Boys are scheduled to play Hamilton, and in this match the former will, no doubt, be making an attempt to improve on their form against East last week. There appears little likelihood of East being deprived of their leading position in the competitions, and there is every indication that they will increase their margin considerably. Sir Julien Cahn’s Visit A sterling contest should be provided at Seddon Park next Wednesday and Thursday, when Sir Julien Cahn’s eleven meets the strong Waikato holders of the Ilawke Cup. The representative team in this district is conceded better chances than any other provincial side of defeating the tourists. Anyway, the encounter should be interesting and marked by j some fine exhibitions of cricket. The j English combination contains many of \ the most prominent of overseas players, some of whom are considered | to have every chance of making the I ranks of test cricketers very shortly, j Probably no man has done more to j popularise cricket than has Sir Julien j Cahn. His first team went, to South j America, where several games were j played in the Argentine, and although the opposition was not severe, the visit did a greal deal to stimulate interest in cricket there. Other elevens were taken by sir Julien to the West Indies, Bermuda, Canada, the United States. Ceylon and the Malay States. Now New Zealand is having its turn. Sir Julien has for some time been interested in this outpost of the Empire and is keen to give some assistance in cricket here, which is rapidly gaining in popularity and improving fast. English Games Recalled In view of the fact that the last New Zealand team in England defeated Sir Julien s eleven by nine wickets, 1 and the touring Dominion side before | that played them to a draw, it will be I interesting to see how the sides fare in the test match at Wellington next month. Mudge, Maxwell, Walsh and Sir Julien Cahn, members of the present side, played against the New Zealanders last year, while Heane is the only survivor of the 1927 match in England. Hardstaff, who topped the English...teat averages against New Zealand last year, is also in the eleven, while Dempster, who played for New Zealand in 1927, ie a member of the visiting side. COMPETITION DRAW Senior A—Old Boys v. Hamilton, No. 2, Seddon Park; Claudelands v. Hamilton East, No. 1, Seddon Park. Senior B—Cambridge A v. Whitiora, at Cambridge; Cambridge B v. Claudelands.
