Hospital Taxation Urging that the incidence of taxation for hospital finance should he revised so that the burden fell more equitably on the community, a remit from North Otago was adopted by the Hospital Boards’ Association conference at New Plymouth yesterday. “With the heavy demands being made for capital expenditure for hospitals the limit of rural taxability will soon be reached,” said Mr H. E. Blyde { Taranaki). Mr J. Rodman (Waitaki) said it was time an alteration in the system was made. The towns should recognise that the counties were paying more than their share. Sequel to Police Chase While Constable E. A. Morrissey was on duty in Albert Street. Auckland, on January 29 he heard splintering glass and saw two men running from Wyndham Street. He gave chase and arrested one. hut the other got away. The sequel took place in the Police Court. Auckland, yesterday, when John Reilly (37), a painter, and George Smale (44), a motor mechanic, both Australians, were charged with vagrancy in that they unlawfully possessed housebreaking implements and attempting to break and enter a shop with intent to commit a crime. Reilly pleaded guilty to vagrancy and was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. He denied the charge of attempting breaking and entering, as also did Smale, and both were committed for trial on that count. Hospital Planning The question of hospital planning and construction, regarded as most important in view of the ever-increas-ing demand for hospital accommodation and the large amount of public money that will be spent on hospital buildings in'New Zealand during the uext few years, occupied considerable time at the conference of the Hospital Boards’ Association at New Plymouth. The opinion was expressed that the Health Department’s staff \\*is doing splendid work and that if it were augmented by the appointment of experts to assist hospital hoards in the designing of buildings, the position would be met. An amendment to that effect was carried.
