Body Identified The body found on Muriwai Beach gl Wednesday was identified at an inquest yesterday as that of Mr Francis Joseph Priest, farmer, married (40), of Waiuku, who was drowned while swimming at Maioro Beach, six miles north of the Waikato Heads, on January 29. Voyage In Cutter Five young men in search of holiday adventure left Auckland yesterday aboard the 36ft. cutter Wayfarer, for Sydney by way of Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island. Later they propose to sail back to Auckland by the same route, the whole cruise to occupy about four months. Scrap Metal Loss It is estimated in Auckland that about £70,000 a year is lost through the dumping of scrap metal in New Zealand and it is suggested either that the Government ban on export should be lifted or State-owned mills to produce reinforcing iron from scrap be established. Fire at Taupo A scrub Ore started near the A.C. Baths at Taupo on Wednesday and it was thought the the bath buildings would be destroyed. Fortunately, the wind carried the flames clear. The Spa Hotel was in grave danger, but the wind carried the fire past the hotel. Scottish Regiment Official notification of the intention to form a New Zealand Scottish Regiment is contained in the Gazette last night. It states that the GovernorGeneral, Viscount Galway, is pleased to approve under the Defence Act, 1909, of the formation of the New Zealand Scottish Regiment, with headquarters at Wellington. Forged Warrant of Fitness At Auckland yesterday Francis Robert Whytock, motor driver, charged with forging and uttering a forged document, pleaded guilty, and was committed for sentence, on bail of £25. The offence consisted of changing a figure from 3 to 5 on an expired ■warrant of fitness for a motor vehicle. State Factory Fire Slight damage was done to portion of the walls of the Government Housing Department’s factory at Penrose by a fire among a pile of shavings and sawdust at 6.16 p.m. yesterday. Prompt action by the sole employee on duty, Mr A. Crowder, and the firemen from three suburban stations prevented the outbreak from penetrating to the main joinery shop. Sly Grog Charge A fine of £SO for keeping liquor for sale in a proclaimed area was imposed on Edwin Ozanne, of Manunui, in the Taumarunui Police Court. It was stated that sergeant and two constables who intercepted the accused’s motor-car found in it 108 quart bottles of beer, two dozen pint bottles of beer and a case of whisky. The liquor was confiscated. Taxi Office Workers After brief proceedings In Conciliation Council at Wellington, complete agreement was reached on the terms of the Dominion award covering clerical workers in taxi company offices. By its provisions clerical workers other than taxi-telephonists are to be subject to the general clerical workers’ award. More Moa Skeletons Five moa skeletons, some almost complete and excellently preserved, have been dug up during the last few days from an area of swampy ground at Waikari and taken to the Canterbury Museum. Another skeleton has been located, but has not been unearthed, and there seems to be every possibility that the swamp, on further investigation. may prove to contain large lumbers of specimens. Judgment for Rent In a claim for possession of a house in Wilson Street and for outstanding rent amounting to £4 2s 6d, which came before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Hamilton, to-day, Donald Henry Whitton, a farmer, of Gisborne (Mr P. G. Harkness) asked for judgment for rent only from the defendant, A. S. Donaldson, porter, of Hamilton East. Judgment for the amount, owing was given by the Court with costs 3is. Dominion-made Goods “In the campaign in support of New Zealand industry it is intended to have the assistance of every member of the party in delivering public addresses and in meeting unions,’’ said the Prime Minister, the Right Hon. M. J. Savage, after the Government caucus in Wellington yesterday. “This campaign is to start right away. I myself will take an active part in the campaign. 1 intend to visit factories in order to obtain a better idea of what is really happening/’ Jury of Maoris As the outcome of an application lodged by accused it is probable that a full jury of Maoris will be empanelled to hear the charge against Joe Douglas, of Wairoa, who is to be arraigned at the forthcoming criminal sessions at Gisborne for an alleged offence against another Maori. The last occasion in Gisborne on which there were members of the native race on a jury was three years ago, and then only three were empanelled.
