MINDING THE TWINS
MINISTER’S NEW ROLE HOUSE-HUNTING COMEDY (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday Apparently distracted by a vain search for a home, the mother of five-months-old twins chose a novel and startlingly direct method of bringing her plight home to the Minister of Housing, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, to-day by making 1 him temporary guardian of the babies. The orderly and active routine of the Minister's office was thrown out of gear for a few hours as the result but Anally the mother was found and departed with the twins and an officer of the Welfare Department. In expressing sympathy with the woman the Minister made it clear that he would not allow the department to be stampeded into giving priority to such cases. He emphasised that in Wellington there were nearly 6000 applications for State houses, some of which had been in for three years, and it was only possible at present to provide houses for a small percentage of the more urgent cases. The woman's application would receive consideration and a home lie provided for her when reasonably possible, having regard to the claims ol‘ others.
