TRADE EMBARGOES

AUSTRALIA AND DOMINION MR SAVAGE’S STATEMENT REJOINDER BY MR LYONS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) lIOBART, Feb. 8 Commenting on reports that Mr Savage had expressed willingness to lift the Dominion’s embargo on Australian citrus fruits if the Commonwealth allowed in New Zealand potatoes, Mr Lyons said: “The time is inopportune for Mr Savage to make such a statement. Australia always has been willing to discuss trading arrangements with New Zealand, but Mr Savage's Government has imposed drastic restrictions on imports from Australia.” V MR SAVAGE’S REPLY ADVERSE TRADE BALANCE (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Wednesday “It has taken them a long time to discover that excuse,” said the Prime Minister, Mr Savage, referring to comment by the Australian Prime Minister, Mr Lyons, on the Aus-tralian embargo position. “The restriction on the imports of Australian goods is a recent development,” he added. “This other thing has been going on for years and the New Zealand Government still has sufficient intelligence to be able to realise that New Zealand stands to gain by expanding trade not only at home but abroad. “Any control of imports is for the purpose of seeing to it we have something in the nature of fair and even dealing, and that cannot be said of the position between Australia and New Zealand to-day, where purchases of Australian goods by New Zealand amount to £7,000.000, while Australia purchases from us goods to the value of somewhere about £3,000,000.”
