SALES ON STREETS
MR W. R. SHATTOCK’B COMMENT CRICKET ASSOCIATION’S REQUEST "The council should make a stand with regard to the sale of things on the street,” said Mr W. R. Shattock when an application from the Waikato Cricket Association to sell tickets on the street on February 14, in connection with the visit to Hamilton of Sir Julien Cahn’s cricket team, came before a meeting of the general purposes committee of the Hamilton Borough Council last evening. “Not a month goes by without the people in the street being stopped with a request to buy something or to make some donation. Most people do not like to refuse, but visitors to the town find it annoying. I do not wish to speak against the present application, but, in extending the privilege to sports bodies, I think we might be creating a dangerous precedent.” “At least, in this case the people are getting something for their money, and that is not always the case,” remarked the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro. Permission to sell the tickets was granted and the association’s application for permission to close Hinemoa Street between London Street and Bryce Street during the match was approved.
