GREAT LOSS IN BRITAIN COMPENSATION TO FARMERS United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Dec. 5 Britain suffered a direct loss of £14.000,000 last year from disease in cattle and poultry. This is equivalent to 10 per cent of the entire output of the meat, poultry and dairy industry. These facts were disclosed'in the report for 1937 of the Chief Veterinary Oflicer of the Ministry of Agriculture Or. D. A. E. Cabot. The number of cattle slaughtered for foot-and-mouth disease was 31,an increase of 26,781 over the 192.>-27 average. Compensation to farmers for these losses totalled £289,070, an increase of £236,590. Another 22,425 cattle were slaughtered for bovine tuberculosis, a figure which has been exceeded only once since 1925.
