HURLED A “HANDLE”
INCIDENT IN HOTEL BAR GAOL FOR TIPSY CUSTOMER (By Telegraph.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday The story of how George Edgar Pengelly threw an empty beer “ handle ” at the' head of the licensee of the White Swan Hotel yesterday afternoon was related in the Magistrate’s Court to-day when Pengelly appeared on five charge's as the result of getting drunk. He was sentenced to thirty day’s imprisonment on a charge of using obscene language in the public bar of the White Swan Hotel and on four other charges he was convicted and discharged by Mr E. C. Levvev, S.M. Pengelly pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector Packer said Pengelly had gone into the' hotel and bought a “ handle ” of beer. The licensee had refused the accused a loan of 2s 6d but had given him a “ handle ” of bee'r. The licensee had then turned away and Pengelly had thrown the empty “ handle ” at him. He missed and a bottle of whisky and a measure were damaged by the flying mug. Pengelly had at the same time used bad language, concluded Mr Packer. He had been “ carrying on ” for ye'ars and had not improved.
