THE ENGLISH DERBY STRIKE OF STABLE LADS PLACES TAKEN BY GIRLS United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright LONDON, May 30. Three hundred stable lads at Lambourn, Berkshire, where some of the Derby horses are in training, struck on May 23 for an increase in wages from 45s to 50s a week. The horses affected included Sir Abe Bailey’s Golden Sovereign. Outside stablemen and girls volunteered for work.
“ The strike will make no difference to the Derby when we can get girls like these," said Fred Templeman, a Lambourn trainer. All the stables affected house several entrants for the Derby, which is to be run on June 1. In Templeman's yard there were six girls, in jodhpurs and sweaters, washing down the concrete, cleaning the loose-boxes and carrying hay. The girls are lodging in the village a few miles away, and are driven to the stables at 6 a.tn. each day under police escort. The only expressed antagonism came from a small crowd who shouted from > distance when the horses were bring exercised.
