RAIDS ON CANTON
HORRORB ON RIVER FRONT DANGER TO FOREIGNERS THREE DAYS OF TERROR (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) * LONDON, May 30 For the third successive day the Japanese carried out to-day an air raid on Canton, 20 aeroplanes dropping 40 bombs, mainly upon Government offices, but adjacent dwellings again suffered. The continuous antiaircraft barrage endangered the foreign settlement at Shameen, which the raiders have hitherto avoided. Steamers bound for Hongkong had to sail early to escape the swarms of refugees pressing upon the quaysides. The British United Press estimates that 300 were killed to-day, making the three days’ total 1300 . Weeping women are continuously searching for relatives among the smouldering debris. The devastation included the flimsy poorer houses, which burned like tinder, and also eight mansions owned by wealthy Chinese in the Tungshan district. The worst horrors were' on the river front, where thousands of terrorstricken people were huddled in their wrecked homes or river-boats. The British gunboats Cicala and Scame'w are on the way to Canton from Hongkong to join the Moth and Tarantula.
