FLOODS IN WESTLAND
BRIDGES WASH AWAY HEAVY GREYMOUTH RAIN (By Telegraph.—Press Association'' GREYMOUTH, Sunday Slips and flooding on roads and railway lines accompanied heavy rain In the Greymouth district over the weekend. On Saturday night over 2in. of rain was recorded in less than 24 hours. The Grey River, running at nine knots, was in high flood to-day. Two bridges spanning the Seven Mile Creek at Dunollie were washed away—one at the Castlepoint Mine and the other at Smith and Party's Co-operative coal mine. The flooded creek also carried, away 10 or 11 coal trucks on the bridge and several of these were found later some three miles down the stream near Rapahoe township. Wash-outs of a minor nature occurred on the Grnymouth-JReefton main railway line between Stillwater and Ngahcre, but these have been repaired by a gang from Greymouth. Skiing Instructors Coming.—The liner Oronsay, which arrived at Melbourne last night, brought skilled skiing Instructors from the Austrian Tyrol for appointments In Australia and New Zealand. M. Ernst Skardarasy, formerly instructor at Kosciusko, New South Wales, is coming to New Zealand. Work for Single Men.—A statement that the Minister of Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, and the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, bad given Instructions to the engineer of the Public Works Department at Auckland to prepare plans of work within transport distance of the city was made £7 Mr W. T. Anderton, M.P., at a meeting of unemployed in Auckland on Saturday morning when indicating what steps the Government was taking to meet the needs of single men who were unable to secure work.
