LICENSE SUSPENSION

DEMANDED BY PUBLIC DUTIES OF MAGISTRATES MINISTER’S CRITICISM (From a Correspondent) SYDNEY, May 21 Criticism by magistrates of the provision in the law for automatic suspension of motorists' licenses upon the conviction for certain offences brought a sharp reply from the Minister for Transport (Mr Bruxner), to-day. “Magistrates are there to interpret the law as it stands,” he said. “ I cannot understand them criticising the provision which was demanded by the public and which was passed through both Houses of Parliament without criticism.” The Minister asked whether magistrates thought that Parliament should allow careless motorists to go scot free and drive on until eventually someone was 'killed. The automatic suspension of the license was the most salutory provision for the control of irresponsible motorists who caused such a loss of life on the road.
