FILM EXTRAS
VERY FEW BUCCEED HARD TIME IN HOLLYWOOD The Central Casting Corporation at Hollywood officially issued these figures:— 12,000 of the 16,000 motion picture extras earned less than £lO each during the whole of the year 1937. 400 averaged around £2B. 96 of them earned more than £BO. Only three received £l2O for their work before the cameras. Two of these three are named. They are Herschell Graham, 28 years old. and Betty Kimbrough, 34. Both are what are known as “dress extras.” To qualify for this higherbracket class necessitates investment in a complete and expensive wardrobe of stylish wear to fit every possible call. This means an outlay in clothes and accessories of about £2OO for a girl, and at least £IOO for a man. Ev%n so, as these figures prove, £l2O a year is the very highest salary anyone of them can hope for in a year. Mr Graham has been a Hollywood extra for 12 years, Miss Kimbrough for four years.
