SHADOWLESS LIGHTING
TRAFFIC BRIDGE IMPROVED ANOTHER HAMILTON INNOVATION A new 7 departure in the scientific lighting of bridges has been carried out by the engineering department of the Hamilton Borough Council in the introduction of mercury-vapour lighting on the reconstructed traffic bridge. Eight lamp standards have been erected there during the last few days, the lamps are now in full commission and they have already demonstrated their superiority over the former type of electric lighting. The chief advantage of the new form of illumination is that it produces completely shadowless lighting of the bridge. This valuable effect is secured by the fitting of vertical glass prisms around the globe's, the prisms bending the light rays round the supporting framework. Even the standards carrying the lamps cast no shadows. A second, and most important advantage on bridges, is that the diffused light from the new lamps has the effect of dimming down the headlights of cars and eliminating the dangers inherent in “ dazzle.” The new lights themselves are also nondazzling and may be looked at directly without discomfit.
