BOWLING YEAR
SOUTH AUCKLAND CENTRE PLANB FOR COMING SEASON FIXTURES UNDER CONSIDERATION That the committee take into consideration the equitable distribution of centre functions amongst the various clubs, was a motion carried at the Annual meeting of the South Auckland Bowling Centre held in the Whitiora Club’s pavilion yesterday. Several members considered that, some of the country towns should be allotted Centre fixtures. The matter came up for discussion when the allocation of donations to clubs for the use of their greens was under consideration. At this stage the retiring president. Mr P. H. Rowe, vacated the chair and Mr W. Maingay was elected to the position. Representatives from Cambridge, Claudelands, Frankton, Hamilton. Hamilton East, Huntly, Morrinsville, Otorohanga, Paeroa, Putaruru, Taupiri, Thames, Te Kuiti and Whitiora clubs were present. Mr Rowe’s motion that the centre again hold its New Year and Easter tournaments next season, was carried. Asked if the clubs wishing to hold tournaments on those dates would be granted their requests, Mr Maingay said he was in favour of club fixtures being approved whenever possible. However, the matter should be left to the executive. Buoceßßful Season A very successful season, favoured with fine weather, was reviewed in the report submitted by the Centre executive. The receipts for the year were £225 6s 3d and the expenditure £199 19s Bd. There were 35 active clubs attached to the Centre with a.total membership of 1574. A new club had been formed at Matangi, a green having been laid down and the new' club should be in full swing during the coming season. The Centre tournament was played at New Year and proved one of the most successful yet arranged. The fixture attracted 30 teams. Matamata and Hamilton tied in the final and the re-play resulted in a win for Hamilton. The champion of champions competition was won by the Otorohanga team while the Paeroa club was successful in the singles match. Veterans’ Day was held on the Whitiora greens.
The Centre’s association with Auckland was maintained by the Hardley Shield match. Eight South Auckland rinks took part and at the end of the day’s play was well ahead on games and points, thus securing the shield for the season. On February 11 rinks from Gisborne visited South Auckland during the course of a tour. The local centre visited North Auckland. A new fixture as far as the South Auckland Centre was concerned, the Easter Tournament, was well supported. A total of 18 entries was received. The Claudelands team was successful in the final. It was unanimously decided not to grant dates for any tournaments before September 17 this year. Election of Officers The following officers were elected: President, Mr W.
