OBITUARY

MRB J. W. LEE (Special to Times) OAMARU, Monday Mrs Jane Winfield Lee, who died at Nelson yesterday, was the widow of the late Hon. E. P. Lee. who was member for Oamaru and Minister of Justice in the late Mr W. F. Massey’s Cabinet. She was a daughter of the late Mr J. Delamhert, of Oamaru. and a very keen supporter of the Anglican Church and the Girl Guides. MR W. T. W. HUGHES PIONEER TE AROHA SETTLER (Special to Times) TE AROHA, Monday One of the early settlers of the Waikato, Mr William Thomas Weston Hughes, died on Saturday, aged 83 years. Born In England, where he received hts early education, he came to New Zealand when 14 years of age, following his elder brother, who had taken up a large block of land In the Waikato. With him he gained hts farming experience. About 40 years ago he took up a block of land at Manamaru, having purchased it from Mr Andrew Farmer, one of the district’s very early settlers. The holding was brought, from its unimproved state into first-class productive capacity. Mr Hughes took a leading part in the progress of the district, and was one of the originators of the Maramaru Dairy Company. Ltd., one of the first co-operative dairying institutions in the Auckland Province, and was elected to the direcorate, a position he held for many years. About 25 years ago he disposed of his farm and. having purchased a residential property at Somers Town, Te Aroha, retired from farming. Later he took up residence at Ruakaka, where he resided lip to a few weeks ago. For 26 years, up to the time of his decease, Mr Hughes held the position of chairman of the Walhou Domain Board, now known as the Te Aroha Sports Domain Board and of the Te Aroha Cemetery Board. On the formation of the Te Aroha News Printing and Publishing Company. Ltd., in 1914 he was appointed chairman of directors, and had acted in that capacity throughout. He was highly esteemed as a man of upright character, with kindliness of nature. He was twice married, his second wife, widow of the late Mr Walter , Nowell, predeceasing him two years I az«i.
