'LAY AT SEDDON PARK iOUTH AUCKLAND COMPETITIONS VANDERERS BEAT GLEN MASSEY Linder ideal conditions the new No. ' -ground at Seddon Park was brought nto use for the first time when jlen Massey and Wanderers, the two eading teams in the. South Auckland r ootball Association's senior competition, tried conclusions. With top points in the championship table defending on the game both teams put their best into the game right from the outset. The teams lined out as follows: Wanderers: Webster, Jim Fisher, McLean, Gilmour, Caldwell, John Fisher, C. Grabb, Clarkson, McCall, Stewart, D. Crabb. Glen Massey: Montford, J. Beever, R. Davies, W. Montford, W- Martin, J. Docherty, W. Lang, T. Corniss, J. Crackett, C. Gorman, J. Lees. Wanderers had the disadvantage of playing with the sun in their eyes in the first half, but they had a good share of the attack and kept Montford on the alert. The visitors’ first run down-field looked dangerous, but the defence was sound and play was soon back in the mid-fTeld. Caldwell went close when he drove hard from a handy position and shortly after Stewart gained a good deal of ground with a smart run down the line. He passed to D. Grabb, who centred well, but McCall’s attempt to head into goal failed. After a further session of defensive play the forwards pressed their way down-field. Martin had a shot at goal but, although hampered by the sun, Webster showed a safe pair of hands and kept his goal intact. D. Crabb then had a good 6hot at goal but the effort went astray and a short time later the visitors were on the attack again. Several times Webster was called on to clear, but he gave the attacking forwards no quarter. Good work by Lees set Glen Massey on the run again, but they failed to complete the movement and the next few minutes saw them on the defence again. Wanderers Score First Fluctuating fortunes characterised the play for a time, and things looked dangerous when Crackett and Gorman came Into action near Webster's goal. The inside-left’s shot missed, however, and shortly after Webster cleared- Wanderers' forwards took up the running. McCall took possession well out and, after a hard run, drove the ball straight into the back of the net. Wanderers 1, Glen Massey 0. Although the visitors sought retaliation they were repulsed and D. Crabb went close with goal shots. The local team could not hold their advantage, however, and they were soon defending strongly in the face of another onslaught from Glen Massey. The difficulty of looking into the sun nearly cost Webster a goal, but he managed to clear. The home players took up the offensive again shortly after and some smart work took place between D. Crabb and Stewart, who looked like adding to the points. Beever and Davies were too strong and proved a good shelter for Montford. Following a short forward rush a little later, Stewart increased Wanderers’ tally when, beating Beever, close, to the goalmouth he found the back of the net. Wanderers 2, Glen Massey 0. A corner shot availed Glen Massey nothing, for their opponents were soon on the move again. A good scoring chance was missed by McCall’s Indiscriminate kicking after one attack, but, after a forward rush, he made amends with a hard shot past the Glen Massey 'keeper. Wanderers 3, Glen Massey 0. The score was unchanged at halftime. Glen Massey Equalise Although the visitors set forth in determined style early on the resumption, the defence held them and good work by Clarkson and Stewart looked like adding points. Montford gave no chances, however, and play went out of danger. While awaiting the whistle for what they thought was a foul, Wanderers lost a good attacking chance and the opposition took advantage of the lull. Gorman had a good run and made no mistake when close to the goal.—Wanderers 3, Glen Massey 1. Another set-back was in store for Wanderers shortly after, for after a series of kicks in the outfield Docherty came through and shot hard at goalIt was a high shot and Webster failed to deflect it over the bar. —Wanderers 3, Glen Massey 2.
With only one point between them both teams were responsible for some determined play and the game seesawed up and down the field for a time. Corniss put a different complexion on matters a little Inter when he put a good shot past Webster, making Hie tallies even.—Glen Massey 3. Wanderers 3. A long session followed in front of Mont ford's coal before McCall, taking .Tim Fisher's pass in a handy position, changed the aspect of the game with a hard shot into the net. —Wanderers 4. Glen Massey 3.
Fluctuating play followed before the Glen Massey forwards made a serious attempt, to equalise. Wanderers were steady and once more they set up an invasion into foreign territory. Montford acquitted himself creditably in the. face orf a hard attack, clearing well. The visitors went close, some, time later, but were soon forced back and Montford was called into action again. D. Crabb gave a good exhibition from well out. but the ’keeper was sound, and play reverted to the mid -fTeld. The game finished shortly after with the. score— Wanderers i Glen Massey 3 Mr F,. R.
