HAMILTON FLOAT DRIVER FIRST CASE OF ITS TYPE (Special to Times) PAEROA, Friday “Operators should realise that traffic inspectors have duties to perform and they should not obstruct them,’’ said Mr W. H- Freeman, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, to-day, when John Cameron, horse float driver, of Hamilton, was charged with failing to comply with the inspector's requirements that the weight of his lorry and load should he measured. The case is believed to be the first of its type in the Dominion. Defendant pleaded guilty, also to a charge of driving at an excessive speed. Traffic-Inspector I*. E. Morrow, of Te Aroha, stated that defendant was returning from a race meeting at Thames on March 12. Witness stopped him at Turua and stated that lie would weigh the lorry. Witness said that at first defendant refused to drive on to the weighing machines, saying that it was impossible to weigh the load in that manner. When asked to drive on to them defendant drove over and two feet beyond them, and did the same when in reverse. He then refused to he weighed. Witness estimated the load at 7 tons 6cwt., while defendant was licensed to carry 4i tons. Tim defence was that the horses were in an excitable condition and that The magistrate imposed a fine of £3 and eosls.
