TUBE TRAGEDY
AN OFFICIAL INQUIRY THE WRONG SIGNAL GIVEN BOARD ACCEPTS RESPONSIBILITY (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, May 20 Colonel Woddhouse, an official of the Ministry of Transport, opening the inquiry into the underground railway smash which occurred last Tuesday, emphasised that it was not a Court, hut a technical investigation. The general manager of the tffcderground railways stated that the eastbound starting apparatus, owing to a wrong connection made in the course of alterations the previous night, gave the " clear " signal before the front train was out of the section. He added there was no explosion'or fire and no delay in calling the necessary assistance. The company’s solicitor stated that the board accepted full responsibility for the accident and would meet all proper claims In a fair and adequate spirit.
