RELIEF TO FARMERS
MORTGAGE BURDEN £4,000,000 WRITTEN OFF INTEREST RATES AND ARREARS (By Telegraph.—Prei* Asioclatlon) *• Lp to the end of April last over £4,000,000 had been written off under the Mortgagors and Lessees Rehabilitation Act, 1936, said the AttorneyGeneral, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, la a statement. The Alinister said farmer* benefited to the extent of £3,350,000. Farm mortgages had been reduced by £2,300,000 and interest arrears amounting to £500,000 had been written off. Arrears of rent for farm lands totalling £123,000 had been wiped out and the farmers had been freed from unsecured debt amounting to £317,000. In addition, further large sums had been written off as the result of voluntary adjustments. Mortgages in the towns had been reduced by £516,000. Interest and rent arrears end unsecured debts totalling £135,000 had been written off. Mortgage commissions had also reduced interest rates in 9700 cases and rates and rent in over 800 cases.
