GALLOPS IN RAIN
FINAL TRIALS AT TE RAPA SCHOOLING OVER COUNTRY ALL IRISH IMPRESSES (By “Martian”) Unpleasant conditions obtained at Te Rapa this morning when the final gallops of horses engaged at the Waikato meeting took place on the course proper, some 66ft. out from the rails. The going was holding but still in comparatively good order and several useful efforts were recorded, the best of the morning being those of Farland and Whirling over five furlongs and Master Briefly over a round. A number of schooling bouts took place over the steeplechase country, those to impress most being All Irish, Huskie and Riotous. Forest Acre, who worked early, sprinted down the straight. Master Briefly (J. Winder) impressed by soundly accounting for Yalpal (F. Hain) over a round in 2.135. He was revelling in his work over the deciding stages and Is in good order for his engagement in the President's Handicap on Saturday. Wotan Over Four Wotan (L. Dulieu) ran home from the half-mile in 56is and later was worked at strong three-quarter pace over a round. Aymon (S. Edwards) was doing slightly better than Windsor Lass (W. Thomson) at the completion of six furlongs in 1.25.
Lucidus (N. C. Trillo), Bryce Street (11. Gilmer) and Kilberis (A. Gilmer), were in that order at the end of a round compassed in 2.16. Lucidus did his work in solid style and will lack nothing on the score of condition for racing at the fixture. Bryce Street, too, has been accomplishing his tasks consistently well and is not without prospects in the big steeplechase on Saturday. Sinking Fund (W. Thomson) negotiated five furlongs in 1.10.
Whirling Hits Out Whirling (C. L. Goulsbro), revelling in the conditions, finished several lengths clear of Prince Acre (J. Winder) at the completion of five furlongs in 1.9, the final half-mile being cut out in 555. Whirling is in splendid heart for pending engagements and may be one of the hardest to dispose of on Saturday. Light Comedy (H. Gilmer) finished slightly in advance of Malagigi (G* L. Goulsbro) over a round In 2.13£. It was a useful trial on the part of Light Comply and as she can handle winter conditions she will not be without a firm following in the mile and aquarter here on Saturday. She is an improved mare as the result of her Pukekohe outing. Cometarium (N. R. McKenzie) and Disturbed (Edwards) finished practically abreast over the deciding stages of six furlongs in 1.25. Both were doing their work well at the end. Innes Lad (R. Cotter) ran once round in 2.17. A Smart Five Furlongs The best five furlongs of the morning was accomplished by Farland (F. Hain) who br*t Tosh (A. Gilmer) and Solomon (Tilsley) at the completion of the trial in I*B. It was a smart effort on the part of Farland, who will advance in favour for the open sprint on Saturday. He did his work in fine style this morning and impressed by the manner in which he was revelling in his work at the end. Jolly Beggar was worked over a round, coming home the last six furlongs in I*3OJ. Viracious (Edwards) was doing better than Clooneen (N. R. McZenzie) over the deciding stages of five furlongs in 1.9 4-5. It was a useful effort for horses of their class and Viracious pleased. Du Maurier (H. Long), strode over five furlongs in 1.12 4-5. He was not extended and executed his work well. Orwere (J. McLaughlin) hit out over five furlongs in 1.11, time on which she could have improved. Waitaka (H. Gilmer) negotiated a round in 2.15. This consistent gelding is engaged in the President s Handicap the first day and should make a bold showing. Mio Fratollo (J. Winder) and Abbey Lass (C. L. Goulsbro) got to the end of five furlongs in I.ll* Schooling Over Country The first to school over the steeplechase country were Neil and My Money, the pair commencing at the brush leading out of the straight and carrying on to give a dashing display. The feature display of the morning was that in which All Irish J. H. Mcßae), Huskie (J. Muir), Windsor Lad (J. McLaughlin) and Valpeen (Foster) were associated. All Irish soon ran to the front and carried on in front till the sod wall leading into the straight where Huskie moved up. In the straight All Irish held on to beat Huskie narrowly with Windsor Lad and Valpeen following at short intervals. All Irish and Huskie impressed by the quality of their work and they will have an optimistic following in the big jumping events at the fixture.
Riotous (F. E. Baker) and Forest Glow (W. J. McDowell) were also sent out to accomplish a similar display, both getting through their work n clashing style. These visitors are showing the benefit of recent racing and should show up in engagements at the meeting. Over Hurdles Mio Lume (M. Stewart) opened proceedings over the hurdles, being sent over the two in front of the stands. He cleared the first satisfactorily but screwed the second rather badly. Silk Sox (L. Dulieu) was associated with In Command (F- E. Baker, over four flights of hurdles and the pair gave a dashing display. Killadar N. Watson) finished clear of Simint (J. McLaughlin) at the completion of a similar effort.
Riding Engagements Additional riding engagements for the first day of the meeting include: j. 11. Xl.-Hae: Celtic Lad, All Irish. 11. Gilmer: Spearl'ord. C. L. Goulsbro: Malagigi, Abbey Lass.
