BOBBY CALVES
PRODUCER CONTROL IMPORTANCE NOT REALISED (Special Reporter) AUCKLAND, Tuesday Regret, that the farmers as a whole had not realised thfe importance of the vote regarding producer control of the bobby-calf industry was expressed by Mr H. O. Mellsop. Auckland provincial president of the. Farmers' Union in his annual report to the conference which opened at Auckland to-day. “Our province, with Wellington, gave an emphatic verdict in favour of the proposals put forward, but other provinces failed to realise that a definite principal was at stake and turned the proposal down.” said Mr Mellsop. “Taking the whole Dominion vote of 62 per cent, in favour. I feel it was a sufficient indication of acceptance of the proposals, but the Minister decided otherwise. T also know that the vote was not sufficiently understood owing to the hurried nature of the proceedings. due to procrastination in official circles after our first request was made.
“It is also certain that if a vote were taken with the knowledge that, is available to-day the result would be what we desire. The position of the industry at the moment is a most unhappy one. the one bright spot being the wonderful support given in those districts where voluntary pools have been organised and so efficiently managed. This matter will conic up for discussion later, when fuller particulars can be given,” concluded Mr .Mellsop.
