SPEEDING OVER BRIDGE

MILK ROUNDSMAN FINED “MENACE IN THE BOROUGH" Speeding over the traffic bridge in Hamilton at a speed of 40 miles an hour led to Ivan Alexander Harris, a milk-van driver, being prosecuted in the Magistrate's Court Hamilton, yesterday, for driving in a manner dangerous to the publio. He was fined £2 and costs. Sergeant Kelly said defendant continued at the same speed up to the Orey street intersection. Defendant told the police that he was endeavouring to make up time on his milk round, following a mechanical breakdown in his van. “ He is a menace in the borough," said Sergeant Kelly, “travelling at 15 feet per second faster than he is allowed by law. He would have had no chance of avoiding a collision had a car come out of River Road. Hie speed was out of all proportion.’* “ I think,” said the magistrate, Mr S. L. Paterson, “ that the customers would prefer to wait for their milk rather than have defendant kill someone.” “ The milk would probably be butter before the customers received it, if defendant continued at that speed for long,” said Sergeant Kelly. Hit Borough Lorry Edward James Douch, a sharemilker, of Paterangi, was convicted and fined £2 and 18s costs for negligently driving a motor-car at the intersection of Norton Road and Maeroa Street on March 15. Sergeant Kelly said defendant collided with a Borough Council motor lorry on the intersection. Collided With Truok Richard Andrew Casey, of Prankton, a carpenter, was fined £1 and prohibited from holding a driver’s license until May 31 for negligent driving in Norton Road on April 23. On a charge of driving without a license defendant was convicted and fined 10s. ! Sergeant Kelly stated that defendant was passing a car which was com- j mencing to turn to the right. A col-! lision was narrowly averted by the other motorist but defendant con-' tinued at a speed of about 40 miles an hour and struck a stationary motor truck parked on defendant's incorrect side of the road. Defendant suffered two broken fingers.
