GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS

Splendid fields have come forward for the opening day, Saturday, of the Waikato Racing Club’s Winter meeting at Te Rapa and with the prospect of a good winter track for the fixture it should be one of the most successful staged in"recent years. Waikato Re-handlcaps Iddo was rehandicapped to 10.lt In the Waikato Hurdles and Clarion Call to 11.12 in the Te Rapa Steepleohase for the first day of the Waikato meeting. Mlo Fratollo MJo Fratollo (not as he Is commonly called, Mia Fratollo j is making steady progress under A. C. Jones' care at Te Rapa and will have his next outing with the colours up at headquarters this week. Master Brterly Master Brierly has been working •long steadily in his trials just now* and he will not be without his measure of support In engagements at the meeting. In the past he has demonstrated a leaning towards the local course. Broken Down According to a Wanganui report Arctic Star broke down during the running of the Wanganui Steeplechase and plans for bringing him to Te Rapa for the Waikato mooting hove been cancelled as • result. Kilberis Kilboris Is in good order for hurdle racing at the fixture. He is not to be schooled this week but will be allotted any amount of strong work on the flat —treatment which appears to be benefiting him considerably. He jumps well and should stay on. Racing at Avondale, too, has assiisted to bring him near to concert pitch. Clarion Call Clarion Call’s decisive success In the Wanganui Steeplechase on Saturday draws pointed attention to his prospects in important Jumping events ahead* His polished exhibition of jumping was one of the features of meeting and he never looked In danger of defeat at any stage In the running. If produced at Te Rapa he will command an optimistic following. Light Comedy Light Comedy indicated at Pukekohe that she is coming right again and. benefited as she Is sure to be by her Pukekohe run, she looks to possess a good chance in the chief flat event ; *ithe first day. On the minimum, the | difficulty will be to secure the services , of • strong light boy. If. such can be ] obtained Light Comedy will make a strong bid to re-open her winning account Du Meurler Du Manrler has gone on the right way since he raced at Pukekohe. where in his first start for a spell he was narrowly beaten by the Improving j Dragon Moth. That race should work ' appreciable Improvement in Du Maurter’s general condition and he I should be seen to better advantage j here than was the case at Pukekohe. j Forest Aore Forest Acre Is racing at the approaching Waikato meeting and he appears to be coming right again. Since winning at Paeroa he has -been unplaced in his last three starts, his last appearance being at Avondale last month when he failed In the Mt. RosklU Handicap. He Is capable of causing an upset at any time and looks In the right condition to do this soon. In Good Heart Whirling, who ran handle any type of track, has been pleasing of late by the quality of his work. He may be j seen out among the sprinters at the local meeting and in his present condition he may take a power of beating. When thoroughly attuned this member of the Julian establishment can hold his own with the Dominion’s best and in the long Te Rapa straight, j ke will be a force to be reckoned with. '

Mlo Lume The first of the visiting horses to to arrive at Te Rapa for the Waikato meeting is Mio Lume. who is to contest. the big steeplechase events here either day. At Pukekohe Mio Lume was travelling well when he crashed on landing, otherwise he may have been difficult to beat. He has taken no harm from that experience and will strip in splendid fettle when produced here. Prior to the meeting he had been working and schooling in dashing style. Concf tlon of Lucidus Lucidus is nearing the top of his form and he should be in tip-top order for racing at the fixture. Since winning the Onewhero Steeplechase at the Franklin meeting he has been working along steadily in his tasks and during last week his exhibition over a round of the steeplechase course was one of the most polished seen on the local course for some time. He will be a fit horse when he goes into the starter’s hands here. Hunting Blood Improved Hunting Blood is definitely improved since Avondale where on either day he weakened noticeably at the end of his races. Last week he was sent over six furlongs and he impressed , on that occasion by the manner in which he was sticking to liis work over the deciding stages of the trial. His figures for the distance were the best of the morning and it should not be on the spore of condition if he fails to give of his best in engagements ahead. Cometarlum

Cometarium still continues to race consistently but unluckily and again at Wanganni he ousted from the major stake. He was beaten on the post the first day by the narrowest of margins after looking to have the issue in safe-keeping, while on the second day he beat all hut Hunting Mint after being badly placed in the early running. Cometarium has seldom run a bad race and the ill-luck that has dogged him recently may leave him at the approaching meeting at Te Rapa. What of Tradesman? Tradesman, who flashed back into the winning lists at Pukekohe after an absence from racing, looks all the better for that outing and in the summing up of sprint prospects this week the aged son of Raceful will have to be considered, especially in the event of holding conditions obtaining on the day. There are few sprinters in the province better qualified to handle winter tracks than he and handily situated in the handicap as he is he appears to have an excellent chance here of repeating his decisive Pukekohe achievement. Prlnco Acre’s Chances Prince Acre is another of the local sprinting brigade susceptible to heavy going, his best races having been won on tracks that effectively anchored the balance of the opposition. He won at Ellerslie and Trentliam in very heavy going and it would appear that the softer the conditions the better he likes it: He has been doing everything required of him in recent weeks, but it is doubtful whether he is now the Prince Acre of a couple of seasons back. Jolly Beggar Jolly Beggar was booked to leave Rlccarton last evening on his way north to compete at the approaching Waikato and Auckland meetings. He will bo under the care of his trainer. F. Christmas, and will be accompanied by Waitaka. in the charge of G. Ridgway, who fs to ride Jolly Beggar in his coming engagements. Jolly Beggar has performed well at Te Rapa in the past, winning the Te. Kuiti Hurdles witfi 10.12 two years ago and running second in the Waikato Hurdles last year with 12.4.

I Looks Well \ Mhlagigi seldom looked better than ||P (l-M-s just MOW and this useful l handicap performer will have to he 1 treated with every respect in the President’s Handicap the first day with | 8.1. A lug striding gelding, the roomy 1 Te Rapa straight will suit him and he 1 i should certainly account for more , than heat him. He has raced fairly | consistently this season for four wins . and as many seconds in sixteen starts and a line through his recent efforts on the track influence one In the asj sumption that he will add further to : his record before the season draws to a close* | Schooling Well j Bryce Street, too, has been school- | ing In attractive style of late and when j he accompanied Lucidus over a round I of Hie steeplechase country the other i day his exhibition matched that of his | companion in fast and clever fencing. ! This member of M. J. Carroll's Jump- | ing string is bearing a healthy appear - ■ ance and will have to be taken into account in the summing up of important jumping events ahead. When j he fell at Ellefslie last month It markied the first occasion that he had ! come to grief over the obstacles and j fortunately his confidence is by no ! means impaired as a result of the mls- \ hap.
