At Rugby Park rather mediocre football in the first half developed Into a dashing exhibition, whleh carried all the thrill* of previous matches this season, and in a strenuously-fought \erdlct Taupiri earned a well-deserved victors- again**. Technical Old Boys, champions of the previous season. Th* honours were definitely with Taupiri. Old Boys almost met ffielr Waterloo against Te Awarnutu. but. after being beaten for the territorial advantage for the most part of the contest excellent defence enabled the t*sm to escape with a draw—a fr** kick to a try. As was anticipated. Cambridge mad* amends for early losses and came out on top for the first time this season In the match against Frankton at Cambridge. Here again the forwards dominated play. Tapp failed with penalty kicks. When McCallum and n’Heam lined up , for a speed' thrust Dalheth saved the situation with a fin* mark. The respite was momentary, however, and relentlessly the Taupiri pack hammered at the goal. Bustling in the loose, the Technical rattled through a gap, and Taupiri infringed in an attempt to curb the movement Dalheth kicked well with the wind from no yards out. but failed to open th* scoring. Kicking was an advantage to Technical. playing with the wind. and. chasinc a long punt. Thompson galloped almost to his goal, but Robinson forced for Taupiri. There was an infringement from the drop out. but again Dalbeth could not find the posts. Taupiri again lurned the scales azain-f Technical with resolute forward work, which developed info a fast back thrust. Taylor, th* Taupiri forward, to chase after it over the line and win th* touch for a g r *at try. F Taylor converted Taupiri lb. Technical s. Th* Technical backs lined up for a big thrust and Goosman was catapulted away to cross the line, but he was recalled for a forward pass earlier. Taupiri. with bustling forwards and lmpro\*d hacks, were trapping Technical into not very envious positions. Repeatedly Dalbeth was trapped and for th* most part the honours were wtth Taupiri until the match ended, with th* final tally— Taupiri 10 Technical Old Boys .... 8 Mr 5. Heather was the referee.
A DRAWN GAME TE AWAMUTU V. OLD BOYS HARD AND EXCITING PLAY In a very hard game, with play confined mostly to the forwards. Old Boys drew* with Te Awarnutu on Saturday, 3 points all. Territorially Te Awamutu had much the better of the game and ft was only solid defence by the Old Boys team that kept them out. In the second half the game was confined to Old Boys’ half. The Te Awarnutu forwards. In a great dribbling rush, took play to half-way, but were penalised, and Llssette put over a beautiful kick to put Old Roys ahead. Old Roys 3. T* Awarnutu 0. From th* t* Awamutu broke through and attacked, but lost possession. Lawry and Hanna rut through, but Slow saved with a good kick back to midfield. Then McAlpine had a shot at goal from Just Inside half-way, but It went wide. The referee called the players together and Issued a warning, for play had been hard- and willing. Old Boys gained possession, but they were well tackled. Using the line, Te Awarnutu worked down field. Slow missed a ball and Hanna and Tombs went away, but the movement broke down. Wynward leq his forwards In a fine passing rush, which broke down Just short of the line. A minute later, with a brilliant piece of w-ork. Wynyard dribbled right through and over the line for a spectacular try. J. Grace failed to convert. Te Awamutu 3. Old Boys 3. Te Awarnutu continued to attack, but Slow saved well. Pretty work by Tombs and Hanna gained ground. Again the locals kicked through, but Lee came round and saved Just In time. Several scrums took place on the visiters’ line and finally a penalty to Old Beys let them out of a difficult situation. Te Awamutu forwards came back again with a dribbling rush, and Slow kicked out behind. From a scrum under the posts Old Boys got possession and relieved the pressure. Wynyard was again to the fore with a nice solo run. Old Boys were being hard pressed and wer* continually defending. Mullins got over, but was recalled for a forward pass, and then Llssette broke away, but Teddy brought him down. At this stage J. Grace was hurt, but continued after treatment. Te Awamutu were penalised. and IJssette’s kick hit the post and bounced Infield. A good clearing kick by McAlpine sent Te Awamutu away, but Old Boys took a turn at attack. Their backs were getting little opportunity to do anything, any move being promptly smothered. Lissette went down the line, but was well | tackled, and Wynward cleared "Ith a hefty kick. Pretty passing by May, Tombs and Bell ended when the lastnamed was forced out. five yards from the line. Hanna took a neat mark, but his kick was Just under th* bar. Bell failed with a drop-kick. The ball went along the T* Awamutu backs to Lippett. but be kicked too hard and the hall went over the dead-line. Old Boys’ backs went away, but Tombs tackled Sayers In time. Then a pedalty to Te Awamutu gave McAlpin* a chance, which Just missed. A penalty allowed Old Boys to gain j ground, but Te Awamutu forwards ! bustled back, and Bell gained ground J. Hanna was injured, but continued } after treatment. Play was now fast, j and exciting, the Boys’ forwards breaking away, but Hanna was there to | force. A great dribbling rush took ■ play back again and Te Awamutu I were lucky to force. FRANKTON WELL BEATEN (Special to Times.) CAMBRIDGE, Sunday. The Stag- competition was continued at Cambridge on Saturday, when Frankton met the local firteen. The visitors were defeated by 17 points to 3 in a game which was rather disappointing- In that neither back division showed much combination or many concerted movements. In a forward tussle the Cambridge pack were much too strong for Frankton. The match was played at victoria Square berore the best attendance 30 rar this season. The teams were:— Frankton.—Thompson; McDonald, Davis, Griffiths; Jones, Turnbull, Wilkins; J. Gray. Sklennars, Vincent, Dick, Moltzen. Bowler, Page, Campbell. Cambridge.—Haworth; Meredith, Peake, Charton; Gear, L. Kelly, Foulds; Harbutt, Mcholl, Beer, Kidd, Watts, Hewitt, Beer, Hall. Frankton Penalised Frankton who kicked orr forced from a long kick. From the twenty-five, play came back to halfway when the home pack forced their way Into the visitors’ territory’, but a Tree kick saved. Play was then held up while H. Peake received medical attention. From hairway Foulds sent to Gear -who dummied his way past two men, sent out to Peake to Charlton, who took play to the visitors’ corner where a penalty against Frankton gave Hewitt a shot at goal which cleared: Cambridge 3, Frankton 0. Good work by H. Peake again brought Cambridge Into the visitors’ territory where Trom a long pass Peake secured, side-stepped his way past his opposing barks to send Beer over Tor a score beneath the posts. Hewitt converted: Cambridge 8, Frankton 0. Cambridge forwards were again on top, dribbling Into Frankton’s corner, but good line-kicking returned play to hair way, where Hewitt Just missed a long free shot. Cambridge forwards again took play into the visitors’ territory and following up a dribbling rush over Frankton’s line, L. Kelly dived to score In the corner. Hewitt missed the kick: Cambridge 11. Frankton 0. A number of forward rushes by Fr&nkton. In which Vincent showed up, took play to the home twenty-live, but P. Beer, Hall and Watts saved with a counter-at-tack. From a loose forward rush in the comer Griffith received and dummying his way past Haworth went over to score. The kick at goal missed: Cambridge 11, Frankton 3. In a forward passing movement Cambridge took play to Frankton’s twenty-five when half-time came with the scores: Cambridge 11, Frankton 3. Dull Flay Early In the second half Peake ran down to Frankton’s corner but good linekicking brought play back to half-way. Frankton’s centre, Davis, came through and looked dangerous, but Haworth saved with a long llne-ldck. Play was not very hrlltant at this stage, neither team making much headway. A passing movement by Cambridge took play to the visitors’ twenty-five, where Hall sent out to L. Kelly, back to Harbutt who dived over to score. Hewitt missed the kick: Cambridge 14, Frankton 3. Play now became very willing. Frankton, making the pace, took play well Into the home territory where a forward rush took play the length of the field, a scrum going down in the corner. From a rebound ofT a Frankton player, Charlton secured to race across to score In a handy position. Hewitt missed the kick: Cambridge 17, Frankton 3.
Cambridge backs were being well fed, but could not penetrate, Griffiths saving Frankton on numerous occasions. The position looked dangerous for Cambridge when Davies cut through the derence, but a force-down resulted. Frankton were securing more or the ball, which gave Jones, Frankton’s five-eighths, more opportunities. Time came with the scores: Cambridge 17, Frankton 3. Mr H. Klrkman was the referee. MORRINSVILLE UNION TERRIERB WIN MARSHALL CUP (Special to Times) MORRINSVILLE, Saturday Keen barracking from the largest crowd seen at a club game. at. Morrlnsvllle for many years marked the first meeting this season of Terriers seniors captained by the veteran Waikato and Morrlnsvllle representative. Bert Robson, and Old Roys, captained by A. J. Altken. Waikato centre three-quarter. Terriers won by 3 points to n, and so become winners for the season of the Marshall Cup, which is decided on the first, round or senior matches. This Is the first time Terriers have won for about 12 years. The teams were as follows: Terriers.—R. Thompson, P. Barker, B. Robson. R. Davidson, W. Johnston, L. Chase, L. Watt, F. Kelly, B. Splnley, Matthews, J. Seymour, Walker, L. Gilbert, G. Wetere, G. Mclntyre. Old Boys.—B. Soanes, F. Saxon, A. J. Altken. M. Fahey, W. Scholium, W. Fussey, J. Ensor, G. Faulkner, Thomas, P. Holes, R. The only points of the match came for a try by Davidson on the left wing, who followed up to touch down after Johnston had cut through and kicked over Old Boys’ line Just before half-time. In the second hair Old Boys made determined efforts to open their scoring account, but great defensive work by Terriers’ backs kept Old Boys out. Altken was well marked by Robson and had no chance to show his speed on attack. Both sets or forwards were evenly matched, and play was up and down the field at a great pace from start to finish., Tr K. Atkins was referee. Leeson, whose speed In the loose rushes enabled him to be on the ball to score two tries. L. Russell, former North Island halfback, got a feast of the ball from the scrums, and profited by this to make several solo runs, from which he scored three tries. Kereone’? other try came from a passing rush, N. Walders touching down. In the second half United had a fair share of the attacking, and D. CITY’S WIN OVER TUI MAORI (Special to Times) TE AROHA. Sunday Herne? park was the scene on Saturday of the City versus Tul Maori contest, which attracted a large gathering or Rugbv enthusiasts. Tul kicked ofT and with a spirited dash followed by a fine line kick bv Rango, gained ground. Wilson put in a tricky run upfleld. but hi? pa?? was not taken cieanlv by Grey, and the backs gaining possession or the ball put City well on the defensive. A serje? of long kicks resulted in no ad vantage to either side, but clever passing by Tui baek? got through the city ranks. Rangi, Tuki and Barbarirh, well backed up in their efforts, got very-close to the city line but a short dash by Robertson relieved the pressure. P.arbarich. Tuki.
