FARM SCHOOL

COURSES AT RUAKURA WINTER STUDIES ARRANGED This winter the Department of Agriculture is again arranging for winter farm schools for young farmers at Ruakura, where three schools will be held. A course in dairy farming will be held from Monday, June 27, to Friday, July 1; one on fat lamb production and cattle fatteninig from July 4 to July 8; and one on pork and bacon production from July 11 to July 15. The dairy farming course will deal with pasture establishment and management, crop production, hay and ensilage making, breeds and management of dairy cows, seasonal feeding of the dairy herd, dairy shed management, diseases of dairy cows, care and management of farm horses, calf rearing, managament of pigs, herd testing, concrete on the farm, and farm shelters. The students will also be taken to see several well-managed Waikato dairy farms. The fat lamb and cattle fattening course will deal with pasture establishment and management, the purchase and management of the ewe flock, preparation of wool for sale, shearing machinery, farm water sup-

ply, management of beef cattle, judging the weight of fat cattle, disposal of fat stock, diseases of she/g), and farm shelters. As with the previous course the students will be taken to see well-managed Waikato fat lamb farms. Pork and Bacon. The course in pork and bacon production will deal thoroughly with all phases of pig keeping. It will include pig farm layouts, building and concrete work, breeds of pigs, pig clubs and pig recording, feeds and rations, feeding and management, feeding for pork and bacon, grading, diseases of pigs, annual crops for pig feeding, shelter, experimental work at the Ruakura Farm of Instruction. The young farmers taking this course will be given the opportunity of inspecting several pig plants. The students will be accommodated at Ruakura and will be charged £1 for board and 5s for bus transport for visits to farms. Young farmers wishing to attend any of the schools are advised to apply to the Fields Superintendent, Department of Agriculture, Hamilton, for enrolment forms.
