PLAY AT CAMBRIDGE SECRETARY’S TROPHY FINAL CONDITION OF GREENS The Cambridge Golf Club completed its first competition of the 1938 season on Saturday when the final medal round was played for the secretary’s trophy. This competition was for the best two of three rounds. The purchase of a new triplex mower has improved the fairways to a marked degree and they are now playing splendidly. Contiaual cutting will soon make them as good as any in the Waikato. The recent dry weather and the lack of water have played havoc with the greens, but these have been top-dressed and resown. Aided by recent rains an excellent take was obtained and they will be playable in a week’s time. The greatest praise is due to the untiring efforts of the green superintendent (Mr R. Ireland) for bringing the course to its excellent condition in such a short space of time. At present temporary greens are being used and their indifferent surfaces make accurate putting impossible. Many good rounds have been ruined by three and four putts at the worst greens. In spite of this difficulty W. Scott produced some fine golf to annex the secretary’s trophy with nett scores dt 67—71—138, off a 15 handicap. N. B. Smith, with 69—71—140 off the 24 mark, was a close second. With the par at 71 these players will require the attentions of the handicapper very soon. F. Von Zalinski, with 70—71 141 off 24, will be reducing when the new greens are again in use. The low markers did not find the temporary greens conducive to good scoring. H. N. Freeman (6) with 80— 80 gross and R. Boucher (8) with 80—81 gross, were the most consistent.
