GIRL DRIVER GUILTY
YOUNG MAN ACQUITTED MOTORING FATALITY (By Telegraph.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH .-.'ay In the supreme Court to-day, Gladys Ruby Vivian (18), was found cuiltv Of driving a motor-car negli- ! gently on the Kaiapoi bridge, thereby j causing the death of Roy Shakespeare Ayers. She was fined £lO and disqualiCed from obtaining a driving license for three years. Miss Vivian was in the car together w-ith James Henry Kitto, a young man, at the time of the accident. Both appeared in the dock on the chargeKitto had told the police that he was I the driver and he took all the re- j sponsibilitv, but some days later the | girl came forward with a statement j that she was at the wheel and that [ Kitto was teaching her to drive. The jury found Kitto not guilty and Miss Vivian guilty, adding a rider that her negligence was the result of incompetence. Mr Justice Northeroft said that quite clearly two persons could not drive one car at once. He therefore directed the jury that in no circumstances must it convict both accused. When the jury brought in its verdict His Honour remarked that he was entirely in agreement with the Jury.
