FRENCH SLOOP ARRIVES
FORMAL CALLB EXCHANGED ROUND OF ENTERTAINMENT (By Telegraph.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Friday To the accompaniment of a gunfire salute from North Head the French sloop Rigault de Genouilly arrived from Noumea at 9 a.m. The customary naval courtesies were exchanged when passing the Devonport naval base. A crowd of citizens watched the sloop berth at the western wharf, special interest being centred in the sailors’ mascots, a young goat named “ Jeannette ” captured during land exercises on New Caledonia and a young wallaby, named “ Charlie,” taken in Brisbane six months ago. Formal calls were exchanged between Captain Plante and Rear-Ad-miral tlie lion. E. R. Drummond, and also civil and military representatives. Captain Plante called on the GovernorGeneral, Lord Galway, at Government House, at 1J.30 a.m. On Tuesday Captain Plante, with his second in command, Captain de Ron, and the French Consul, M. Andre Pouquet, will dine with Lord and Lady Galway. The sloop will dock on Monday for an overhaul and sails on May 23rd for Lyttelton, Akaroa and Dunedin. A full round of entertainment has been arranged for the officers and men, and the officers will visit Rotorua.
