LUNAR ECLIPSE
TO-NIQHT’B PHENOMENON VISIBLE IN DOMINION Given favourable conditions, the first of a series of four eclipses to occur this year will be visible in the Dominion this "evening when the moon will undergo a total eclipse. The eclipse will be the only one visible in New Zealand this year. The moon will enter the earth'* penumbral shadow at D.ii p m. but this stage of the eclipse will result only in a barely perceptible diminution of the moon's brightness. In the popular uense the eclipse cannot be regarded as having commenced until G. 26 p.m., when the moon will make its first contact with the earth's shadow. The amount of the obstruction will increase until 7.48. and the total eclipse will end nt 8.39 p m. As the moon's eastern limb emerges from the shadow the amount obscured will gradually decrease. Although the shadow will leave the moon's face at 10 p.m. the penumbral stage of the eclipse will cont nup until 11.13 p.m. A total solar eclipse will occur at the end of this month and there will not be any further eclipses until November, when another two, solar and lunar, will take place.
