COLLIERY DISASTER
THE WORK OF RESCUE ROYAL FAMILY’S SYMPATHY SHOCKED AT TERRIBLE DISASTER (Official Wireless) (Received May 12. 11 a.m.) RUGBY, MAY 11 The work of recovering the bodies in the Markham colliery was continued throughout the night and early this morning. Officials of the company and inspectors descended into the pit to make a preliminary examination and to discover the cause of the explosion. Nation-wide sympathy has been expressed with the bereaved families of the small village of Durkmanton, where most of the miners lived. One of the earliest messages received was from the King, who stated: ‘‘The Queen and I were shocked to hear of the terrible explosion and the, heavy loss of life involved. Please convey our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved relatives and those who are still in anxiety. We should like also fo be informed of how the injured are progressing.”
