Copyright) (Received May 10, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 9 The Florence correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says the former capital of united 'ltaly accorded Herr Hitler the most enthusiastic reception since his arrival in Italy. Thousands of Black Shirts ch'eered wildly in the streets through which Herr Hitler and Signor Mussolini travelled to tiie palace. The crowds clamoured until the Dictators appeared on the balcony, to which they were recalled ten times. The precautions taken to ensure Herr Hitler's safety, however, were more stringent than in Rome or Naples, owing to the distribution g of a large number of leaflets announcing that Florence would he the Fuehrer’s tomb. The Italian police arrested a large number of people, and other people were sent hack as menial patients to asylums. Nobody without a permit was allowed to enter the city. All cellars were carefully inspected and locked :up. Message from Herr Hitler Herr Hitler, on the eve of entraining for Munich, issued the following statement ; "It has been too beautiful. I have been moved by the remarkable friendliness and sympathy of the population, and rejoloe at the Intimate understanding between Fascism and Nazl-lsm. Ours Is certainly the same world.”
The Berlin correspondent of the Times says Germany is confident mat the visit has strengthened the RomeBerlin axis. Cor . right (Received May 9, 3 p.m.) ROME, May 8 Twelve bombers sank in 22 feet of water, in order to permit their -subsequent salvage for scrap iron, two 3000-ton tramp steamers. Herr Hitler and others saw the preliminary explosions, hut concentrated bombing by projectiles weighing 2cwt and upwards raised such a pall that nothing was visible till it cleared, when the vessels, torn and gashed, lay at tiie bottom.
