Ltd., sth April,. 1935 At your request I have had biological tests carried out at the Wallaceville Laboratory to determine the efficiency of the Speedway, steriliser in the pasteurization of skim, milk. I herewith append a report from the Wallaceville Laboratory on the result of the tests "At the request of Speedway Steam Products, Ltd., the Department of Agriculture has carried out a number of biological tests to determine the efficiency of. the 'Speedway Steriliser' in the Pasteurisation of skim-milk, with particular reference to the destruction of the tubercle bacillus. Milk known to contain tubercle bacilli was inoculated into guinea pigs, and its virulence was demonstrated by its capacity to cause tuberculosis in these animals. A further portion of the same milk was passed through the plant under the specified condition of temperature, and further guinea pigs v/ere inoculated as above. Whereas all the guinea pigs inoculated with the sample of milk which had been passed through the plant remained healthy and free from tuberculosis, those inoculated with similar milk which had not been subjected to such treatment all developed tuberculosis. Mr. Levy, Manager, Speedway Steam Products, Ltd., 5 1 Albert Street, AUCKLAND, C. 1. . Dear Sir, We are indeed delighted with the result of your experiments in respect of the idea furnished to you by one of our Directors regarding the pasteurisation of skim milk. The very satisfactory endorsement which you have received from the Department of Agriculture in regard to the results of their practiced tests at their Wallaceville laboratory, is also very gratifying. As you are already aware, we handle approximately 25 per cent, of the total pigs produced in New /.ealand annually, and having 10,000 dairy farmer shareholders, we are in an excellent position to judge of the tremendous value of this attachment to your steril- • iser. Ihe approximate cost last year to the dairy farmers or this country represented by losses occasioned by tubercular infection in their marketable pigs, is upwards of £60,000, a colossal sum, and one which, In the absence of a satisfactory means of pasteurising skim milic from the separator, would be an increasingly growing one. You may not be aware that for some yean past, the Department of Agriculture and our Organisation have been seeking some effective method of dealing with this question, and in consequence you will realise how gratified we ere to have at last found an effective and practical method of dealing with this issue. We wish you every success in the sale of your product, and you may rely upon our Organisation for its whole-hearted and energetic assistance in getting one of your plants on every dairy farm in this country. With our very best wishes for the success you deserve, we desire to remain, Yours faithfully, W. A. PHILLIPS. Chairman of Directors. Further Particulars of the SPEEDWAY STEAM STERILISER and Skim Milk Pasteuriser Gladly Supplied by The above experiment demonstrates the power of the 'Speedway Pasteuriser' plant when used as directed to destroy tubercle bacilli in milk, and should eliminate tuberculosis in pigs due to ingestion of tubercular milic Yours faithfully, Speedway Steam Products Ltd. Director-General. 51 ALBERT STREET AUCKLAND ci.
