CIGARETTES SOLD
AFTER-HOUR TRADING The sale of cigarettes after hours led to two convictions in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, to-day by Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M. Frances O’Hara, of London Street, was prosecuted by the Labour Department for selling cigarettes at 7.57 p.m. on Saturday, March 26. She told the inspector that she could afford to sell cigarettes after hours. A fine of £2 was imposed. James Thorpe, cafe proprietor, of Victoria Street, was fined 10s for failing to observe a statutory half-day on Saturday, March 26. the charge arising from the sale of packets of cigarettes for 9d that evening by an assistant in his employ. Mr A. L. Tompkins, for defendant, said Thorpe had instructed his assistants not to sell cigarettes after hours.
