GERMANY AND ITALY
GREAT AND FRUITFUL FUTURE WILL FACILITATE PERMANENT PEACE THE WORLD'S OPPOSITION & LACK OF UNDERSTANDING (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) Received May 9, 11 a.m.) ROME, May 8 Herr Hitler, at a banquet in Rome, said: “Italy and Germany had to defend themselves against a world filled with opposition and lack of understanding, and gradually cordial friendship has developed between the two peoples, the solidarity of which has been tested by events in recent years. These events have demonstrated to the world that the legitimate and vital interests of the great nations must in all cases be taken into account. “It is self-apparent that our work of understanding will go forward. I know for Italy and Germany there is a great and fruitful future. Italy and Germany together will not only facilitate permanent peace, but with their guaranteed co-operation will form a bridge of mutual help and support.”
STRONG NATIONS HERR HITLER IN ROME PROMISES OF FRIENDSHIP united Press Assn.— Elec. TeL Copyrtarni ROME, May 8 Two hundred guests attended the banquet given in honour of Herr Hitler at the Palazza Venezia. Signor Mussolini, welcoming the Fuehrer, declared his visit sealed the GermanItalian understanding which they had so firmly willed and tenaciously constructed, and which had a historic function in the parallel and permanent interests of the two nations. "Fascist Italy knows only one ethical law—the friendship which lias been obtained by German-Italian collaboration and consecrated in the Rome-Berlin axis," said Signor Mussolini. "Italy and Germany abandoned the Utopias to which Europe blindly entrusted its fortunes in order to seek, between themselves and with others, a regime of international cooperation which may erect more effective guarantees of justice, security and equitable peace. This can only be reached when the elementary rights of each people to live, work and defend itself arc loyally recognised and political equilibrium corresponds with historical realities.” Nazl-lsm and Fascism Herr Hitler, responding, said .Naziism and Fascism had created two new and powerful nations—a block of 120.000,000 people who were determined to preserve their eternal right to live and to protect their equal interests and ideological unity against all forces endeavouring to resist their natural development. “It is my unshakeable will and legacy to Germany,” said the Fuehrer, "that it forever regards the ItaioGerman alpine frontier as inviolable.” Herr Hitler added: “Just as you and the Italians preserved friendship toward Germany In her decisive days, so shall I and my people show Italy friendship In a serious hour.”
