NEW SEASON OPENS GAMES IN SOUTH AUCKLAND GLEN MASSEY BEAT ROVERS The South Auckland Football Association's 1938 season was opened on Saturday, when games were played at Hamilton and -Huntly. After the recent rain the grounds were inclined to be heavy. Playing at Seddon Park Glen Massey beat Claudelands Rovers by six goals to nil. Although they had a fair amount of the territorial advantage, Rovers were handicapped to a certain extent In their defence, and several of Glen Massey's goals were particularly easy. The teams were as follows Glen Massey.—J. Montford, Davis, Beaver, Crackett, Brown, Frlzsell, Lang, W. Montford, Corniss, Gorman, Lees. Rovers. —James, Clark, Parkes, Riddock, G. Crabb, Moore, D. Crahb, Rogers, Young, Sohonau, Farr. Rovers shewed an attacking spirit in the first few moments and J. Montford had his hands full for a time. G. Crahb orossed well towards the goal, but the keeper was just too smart and the shot went astray. Another likely scoring effort went wide when Farr over-ran the ball, but the home team maintained a steady pressure. A goal kick sent the visitors away for a time and Gorman sent his front line well within striking distance. Matters looked dangerous for Rovers and Lang scored an easy goal after a 6hort dribbling run.—Glen Massey 1, Rovers OOlark’s Sound Osfenoo Playing at right-back J. Clark was responsible for some sound defence for Rovers, while his colleague, T. Rogers, also lightened the goalkeeper's duties. Having settled down after the first few minutes’ play Glen Massey had the home team penned up for a time until Schonau sent them away with a fine kick. Moore got away on his own for a time, but Brown was too strong and Moore lost possession. The ball went across to Parkes, but he mis-kicked and the next few minutes saw* Rovers on defence again. Gorman spoilt a good scoring chance with Indiscriminate kicking when the ball had been centred to him and again the fortunes fluctuated for a time. The earlv-season rawness which is only to be expected at this time of the year was the downfall of many attacks, while a lack of co-operation also slowed matters up considerably. A passing movement between D. Crsbb and J. Crabb looked likely, but Moore failed to carry on and the effort collapsed. Glen Massey held the attack for a time, but their kicking lacked snap and accuracy.
The territorial advantage lay with Rovers for a time, but the visitors soon turned defence Into attack again and. Clark was faced with Gorman In possession of the ball. The Glen Massey player fell and lost possession, the ball continuing to roll towards the goalkeeper. James had left his post again and the home team was two down when the ball rolled into the unguarded goal.—Glen Massey 2. Rovers 0.
■Half-time came shortly after with out alteration to the score.
Fluctuating play characterised the opening of the second half and an offside infringement spoilt a likely scoring chance for Rovers. The resulting kick carried Glen Massey away and they had the opposition penned up. Gorman decided matters when, with a good shot over the heads of a bunch of players he sent the ball past James. Although it was Glen Massey’s third goal, it was the first time that a real goaling effort had achieved its purpose.—Glen Massey 3, Rovers 0. Gorman Scores Again Farr put in some solid attacking in the next few minutes, but Montford was fairly sound and managed to keep his goal intact. Lees had a good run down the line some time later but his centring shot was not followed up and a good effort collapsed. A short melee in front of the goal was of no assistance to Glen Massey, but Gorman made his Influence felt again when he drove the ball Into the back of the net. —Glen Massey 4, Rovers 0. Another attacking movement carried Glen Massey within striking distance again and Parkes challenged Corniss for possession. The Glen Massey player was too fast, however, and opoe more the ball beat James. Glen Massey 5, Rovers 0. Rovers’ forwards took a hand In matters for a time and had Montford on the alert. The ’keeper was sound, however, and gradually the play reverted to the other end again. Taking a cross pass neatly, Gorman had little difficulty in putting the ball behind James again.—Glen Massey 6, Rovers 0. Faced with such a Rovers pressed Glen Massey well f*ck, but Farr's goaling effort went astray. Fortunes fluctuated for a while, but an infringement in Glen Massey's territory carried them down field where the home team had an anxious time again. Play finished shortly after with the scores.— Glen Massey ‘ 6 Rovers ........... 0 Mr - E. R- Marsh was the referee. JUNIOR RESULTS The results of the junior games were as follows: —Rovers A 7 v. Wanderers 1; Rovers B 4 v. Composite 2.
