FOREST FIRES

AN ILLEGAL PRACTICE SALUTARY FINES IMPOSED (By Telegrapn.—rress Association) WELLINGTON, Friday That the lighting of fires in State forests without a permit is illegal and dangerous, was brought into prominence to-day when Keith BrookeTaylor, Edward Robert Griffiths Wallace, and Raymond George Corser, were so charged and fined £5 each and costs. The charges against three other defendants were dismissed. The fires were lit in the course of a tramping exhibition in the Tararuas during the Wellington Anniversary week-end. Mention was made of a fire in the Tararuas in January, but these men were not responsible for it. Fines were also imposed on various of the accused in regard to having a riflle without a permit and shooting deer.
