The Public Works Department. Pneroa, reported on the progress or clearing the Wa ton River a? follows: —Mellin’s bridge, up-stream to Waitoa bridge. 8 mile? 7 7 rhalns; Waitoa bridge to Diagonal Road bridge, 5 miles 3 4 chains; Waitoa bridge ; to Ngarua bridge, cleared and snagged, 'l4l chains, making a total of 9 miles 7 chains; Diagonal Hoad bridge to Walton Road bridge, cleared and snagged. 4 8 chains, making a total of 7 miles 2 chains; Walton Road bridge to Walton railway ! bridge. 50 chains snagged and cleared, the total being 1 mile 40 chains. Foremen’s Reports Mr G. F. Johnson, foreman or works in i the Wattoa-Tatuanul area, reported that a ! large number or slips were blocking the drains, while several dead sheep had been found. Cattle walking along on the top of the drains were the mam cause of the slips. a number of drains in the sub- ; division had been cleared at a cost of 1 is 2sd to 2s ©id per chain. I Mr T. Stanish. foreman of the Hunga- . hunga subdivision, reported that clearing work had been done In Klely’s, Lipanovieh’6. and virkers’ outlets. ihe principal works or the past month were: Walwhero. 492 chains, costing £46 2s 6d; Bowdltch’s, 54 mains. £l2 13s Pd; and ; Watharakeke, 408 chains. £39 15s. i Mr H. d.
