YOUTHS AND LABOUR
OPPORTUNITIES DENIED ADDRESS BY MR O. 'C. MAZENGARB Introducing his remarks with reference to the cry for a greater population In New Zealand, Mr O. C. Mazengarb, of Wellington, in addressing a large and enthusiastic gathering of women in the Toorak Chambers yesterday, said that such an increase was useless unless the people were interested Jn productive enterprise. Unemployment reached its height throughout the world In 1932. Labour parties in every country blamed the existing Government for the state of affairs and declared they could remedy them, if they were in power. There were hundreds of youths today throughout the country \vho were being denied opportunities of making a start in life. They were the victims of the depression. Award rates were so inelastio and trade unions so powerful that the restrictions placed on those youths were of such a nature, it was impossible for them to be overcome. Many boys were waiting until they were 21 In order to obtain positions on tho Public Works. Since the Labour Government assumed office, there had been a steady drift of the people from the country to the towns. Many women were working to earn money to keep the children whom It was their duty to look after. In cases where families were dependent on the mother it could bo understoood, but why should they be expected to do the work when there were such a large number of men benefiting from sustenance, Mr Mazengarb asked. .
