ILLEGAL CONTEST
PUBLISHED IN JOURNAL. FOUR YOUNG MEN FINED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday Arising out of “ The New Zealand Geographic •Competition No. 1” four young men were charged before Mr W. F. Stillwell, S.M., with establishing a lottery. Detective-Sergeant Doyle said about a week before its publication two of them interviewed a member of the staff of the paper and were advised that the contest was legal with minor alterations and if they could provide the paper with good references as to personal character the paper would publish details of the contest. The net profit made by each was £2 9s Bd. There was no suggestion that they were not honest but they had committed a definite breach of the Gaming Act. The magistrate took the view of the defence that it was not a serious breach of the Act 'but a technical one. He took it that next time they would first consult a member of the legal profession. Each was fined £2 and costs.
