PRIVATE OPERATORS.
“NO SENSE OF SECURITYRAILWAY OFFICER'S PREDICTION (By Telegraph.— Press Association.) AUCKLAND. Fridsy The prediction thst within 12 months the business of carrying goods between the principal cities and towns of the Dominion will be conducted under single ownership conditions was made this morning by Mr. H. C. Couch, district traffic manager of railways at Auckland, when a number of applications for renewal of goods service licenses were before the No. 1 Licensing Authority, Mr. E. J. Phelan, to-day. N The authority pointed out that short-dated licenses had previously been given operators to enable the Railways Department to negotiate for the purchase of the services and under existing conditions the operators had no sense of security. He stressed the desirability of the department expediting negotiations for purchases so that the fate of various services would be determined once and for all.
