CRASH INTO POLE
FRANKTON MAN KILLED LOST CONTROL OF TRUCK ACCIDENT NEAR CAMBRIDGE J When a motor-truck he was driving careered off the main road between Cambridge and Hamilton about 4 p.m. yesterday and crashed into a telegraph pole in "the vicinity of Mr J. Fisher's residence. a well-known Frankton business man, Mr Stephen Tapp, was killed. Although there appear to have been no eye-witnesses, the path of the vehicle extended along three chains on the left-hand side of the roadway. In Its course the lorry crossed a water channel and ended up on Its left side. When the first’ passers-by reached the wrecked cab Mr Tapp was dead. Mr Tapp apparently lost control of the truck and it is suggested that he might have had a heart attack. When he was discovered It was found that there were extensive injuries on the left side of his head severe enough to have caused instantaneous death. The | cab of the vehicle was damaged ex- | tensively. The pole was snapped but only minor damage was done to the wires, and telephone services were not affected. Interest In Sport As a member of the Waikato Racing Club for the past 16 years and of the Waikato Trotting Club for about 15 years, Mr Tapp was well-known in sporting circles. He was a steward of the Racing Club and he was represented on the tracks by the horses Bright Day, Bright Night, Bezmar, Glen Spring and Acheledes. Until the building was destroyed by fire four years ago, Mr Tapp was licensee of the Ohaupo Hotel from 1925. Since then he has conducted a business in Hamilton as a skin-buyer. He is survived by a wife, two sons and four daughters. An inquest was opened in Cambridge, to-day.
