MOTOR BALL
FIRST ANNUAL FUNCTION UNUSUAL DECORATIVE SCHEME
VERY LARGE ATTENDANCE
An arch transformed with a lovely profusion of huge punga and nlkau fronds, and a fairy-like stairway massed with cool bush greenery and fern fronds, and festooned above with gay strings of lights presided an auspicious entrance to the foyer of the Regent Ballroom last evening on the occasion of the first annual Motor Ball, sponsored by the motor iflrm3 of Hamilton, which was a memorable function. The ballroom was thronged and the evening was an outstanding one with gaiety the keynote, and augurs splendidly for succeeding balls. The foyer itself was most attractive with nikau and punga fronds, and potted palms, lacebark and fir trees. The ballroom had been transformed with a wealth of fernery, punga fronds hiding all the pillars round the hall, and being arranged with nikau fronds about the xvalls and in the corners. A canopy of scarlet and gold streamers was overhead in the shape of a roof with huge clusters of red and gold balloons and scarlet streamers cascaded over the large square lampshades. ‘Gaily shaded lights outlined the supper balcony and the stage, and scarlet flood-lights cast a rosy glow over the ballroom. Large punga fronds softened the outlines of the stage, and lycopodium was entwined over the top. A message of welcome in sparkling silver letters formed the background of the stage which was fringed at the front, in scarlet and gold streamers. Punga fronds hid the trellis work on either side of the stage and nikau fronds climbed up the archways. The supper balcony where a delicious supper was served during the evening was most attractive with ferns artistically arranged, the tables looking colourful and charming with scarlet and gold streamers, and Iceland poppies, daffodils and anemones in shades of scarlet and gold. Gaily designed Japanese lanterns here and there about the ballroom added a further note of colour.
A feature of the evening was the continuous music, played by Theo Walters and his Peter Pan Band from Auckland, from the dais, and by George Brown and, his Regent Dance Band from the balcony. Brilliant novelty presentations by Theo Walters and his band added much to the pleasure and, success of the evening, and very pleasant numbers by George Brown and his band were very warmly appreciated. Later in the evening the distribution of favours lent a further carnival note. An unusual feature of the function was that It was organised entirely by a men’s committee, to whom* the greatest praise is due for a particularly enjoyable evening, the excellent arrangements early assuring its sucAmong the many present were:— Mesdames AV.
