GUARANTEED PRICES
NEXT SEASON’S RATES NOT YET REVEALED DECISION PROBABLE THIS WEEK (Specisl to Times.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday The Government has not decided the guaranteed prices for butter and cheese for the coming season, but the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, stales that a decision will probably be reached and an announcement made before the end of the week. A report that the Government had decided upon a :ise of Id per lb was denied by Mr Nash as " pure speculation.” adding: “Someone might predict an increase of Id; someone else might predict an increase of 6d. Either might be right or either might be wrong.” Another point referred to was the estimate that the first season’s trading under the guaranteed price scheme is likely to result In a loss of about £400,000. Mr Nash declared this was purely guesswork. Elaborate calculations would be necessary for an outsider to determine the results of last season’s operations by the Marketing Department.
